I came across something from the book I’m currently reading, “The gift of imperfection” by Brené Brown,
…the more entrenched and reactive we are about an issue, the more we need to investigate our responses.
I have come to realize that this is true.
If you over-react to something, it’s usually something deeper than what it is you reacted to.
When I say over-react, I mean you react in a way that seems excessive or unlikely for that situation.
For instance, if someone cries so much about a movie that is beyond what is normally expected, then chances are, it’s not just about the movie.
If someone cuts a friend off for not inviting them somewhere, even after the friend has apologized, sometimes it’s deeper than just not getting an invite. It points to something else that might seem related or unrelated.
Sometimes you are not aware enough to know when you are overly reactive to something. Sometimes it takes someone else to tell you that the way you responded or reacted is way beyond normal.
If you’re self-aware enough, that reaction is something to investigate more deeply and hopefully deal with.
So I’m totally for the quote from Brené ‘Brown’s book that says
…the more entrenched and reactive we are about an issue, the more we need to investigate our responses.
