The Power of God: Does it make Sense?

Power of God

Have you come across people who make you feel that what you believe in does not make sense? Everyone is entitled to their opinion and their beliefs too so you can’t exactly blame them for how they feel concerning your beliefs.

One thing I have realized is that people don’t understand the message of the cross, they don’t understand the concept of grace or mercy, and they don’t think the things written in the Bible make sense or are logical. Even as a Christian, it can be difficult grasping these things or even explaining it to them in a way that makes sense.

The truth is, this Christian life is by faith, by believing. It does not appear logical. People wonder how a man can die on the cross for our sins. Also, some don’t even believe Jesus ever died for us or if He exists. They believe it to be pure fiction, same as the Bible. I’ve heard people undermine the power of God because they think it’s not possible. An example is when it comes to healing or the prophetic. Some people think it’s a scam or certain illnesses cannot just disappear. Why? It’s not logical, it does not make sense, it’s not possible.

Power of God

Recently in my hostel, there was a discussion going on right outside my room window and they were talking about grace and unmerited favor. One of the guys said they don’t believe in favor without works of which I could get where the person is coming from. You can’t fold your hands and expect money to come to you. Even God wants us to be doing something and He blesses the works of our hands. God also doesn’t condone laziness.

“Poor is he who works with a negligent hand, but the hand of the diligent makes rich”

Proverbs 10:4

“How long will you lie down, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep? “A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest” – your poverty will come in like a vagabond and your need like an armed man”

Proverbs 6: 9-11

However, He said something I disagree with. He said a third class student cannot be working in Shell when Shell has a standard of people that they take into their company. It’s not possible and you can’t call it unmerited favor. I smiled.

It doesn’t look possible really, but I believe that anything can happen. God has a way of working things out for someone. The amazing thing is we really don’t have to understand it because it is not logical, it doesn’t make sense. Luke 18:27 says

“But He said, “The things that are impossible with people are possible with God””

Genesis 18:14 also talks about how nothing is difficult for God. This was when it looked like Sarah would not bear a son but eventually it happened.

“Is anything too difficult for the Lord? At the appointed time, I will return to you, at this time next year, and Sarah will have a son”

There’s also a scripture I so much love and it’s in 1 Corinthians.

“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate”

1 Corinthians 1:19 NIV

“But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong”

1 Corinthians 1: 27 NIV

When people talk this way about God, the Christian life and other related things, it can be discouraging. You tend to think about it and use your head to analyze God’s power and the message of salvation and then doubt creeps in. I’ve been a victim myself, so I understand. Like I mentioned earlier, the Christian life is purely by faith, it’s not a seeing-is-believing scenario.

“For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength”

1 Corinthians 1:25 NIV

This is why I cannot emphasize it enough the need to know God for yourself. Are you a Christian because your parents are and automatically that makes you a Christian? You see, I’m not perfect, that’s far from it. I have my weaknesses and God is helping me in this Christian walk. There are some things that I don’t understand but I still trust God because it all cannot be a lie.

Why do I think so? I have seen the power of God first hand. Things have happened that made me undoubtedly believe that there is a God and there is power in the name of Jesus. I tell people this, no matter how far I drift away from God, or I want to disbelieve in Him and His power, it is just not possible, except I have forgotten how God has showed Himself to me. This God is real, His powers are real. There is nothing difficult for Him to do. There is no situation that He cannot turn around.

Power of God

If you feel discouraged or you are losing faith in God, perhaps because of what you see around or the new ideas you have come to believe. Take courage in knowing that God never changes and He’s still the same God. Also realize that you don’t have to understand how He works to believe in Him. Finally, know that people won’t believe what you believe in and they may think you are delusional or have been brainwashed. It’s perfectly normal. It doesn’t have to make sense and you don’t have to convince them either. All that matters is that you have experienced God and know the wonderful things He is capable of.

“For the message of the cross is foolishness [absurd and illogical] to those who are perishing and spiritually dead [because they reject it], but to us who are being saved [by God’s grace] it is [the manifestation of] the power of God”

1 Corinthians 1:18 AMP

“But have nothing to do with foolish and ignorant speculations [useless disputes over unedifying, stupid controversies], since you know that they produce strife and give birth to quarrels”

2 Timothy 2:23 NIV
